Kursinhalt

Whether spoken or written, academic English is simply different than everyday English. If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to find the right word to use in a paper or had an in-class discussion where the term you wanted wouldn’t come to you, this course can help!

During the course, we will work with the official Academic Word List as well as vocabulary contained in scholarly texts in your own field. By engaging with academic terminology in ist natural form (including phrases and collocations) and becoming familiar with helpful vocabulary-related resources, the course places an emphasis on taking helpful vocabulary from passive knowledge to active use.

Throughout the course, we will:

• create vocabulary journals that look at words in depth
• engage with scholarly texts to find appropriate vocabulary to put to use in your writing
• hold a discussion on an academic topic integrating vocabulary chosen by the class
• complete occasional mini-quizzes to assess acquisition of key academic words and phrases

• das entsprechende Ergebnis beim Einstufungstest "Unicert-Niveau II-2 / Unicert II-2 (Unicert Niveau II, Phase 2)"
oder

• das erfolgreiche Absolvieren (Schein) eines Kurses der Unicert-Stufe II am Sprachenzentrum.

This course is part of the requirements for the Unicert II certificate (vocabulary course). If you wish to get the Unicert certificate for this level, you also have to complete the classes Intermediate General English 1 and 2, an oral course like (Conversation Skills or Oral Academic English) and a writing course (Tools for Writing, English at Work: Writing or Academic Writing (Level II)).
